Groundhog's Day Trivia
Groundhog Day owes its origins to the ancient Greeks who believed that an animal’s shadow was its soul, blackened by the past year’s sins. While the animal hibernates; its soul is cleansed by nature. If it wakes up before winter is over, it will see its dirty shadow and be horrified and return to it's den for more purification. Groundhogs eat dandelion greens, clover, plantain and grasses. An adult Groundhog can typically can weigh up to 14 pounds. They binge in the summer before hibernating and by February, they have lost as much as half their body weight. Groundhogs have excellent eyesight but in their burrows underground they rely on their whiskers to help navigate. Punxsutawney Phil appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show in 1995 |
