Tips for Growing Roses
Roses like to be fed lightly but OFTEN. Deep water them from the base of the plant so as not to get water on leaves. To much moisture can result in mildew and other fungal diseases. Do a major pruning in the early spring to encourage growth and clear out old, weak or diseased wood. Cut at a 45 degree angle just above the bud Deadhead roses during the growing season to encourage more blooms. You can prune lightly in fall to prevent larger branches from being damaged in wind storms and to clean up faded blooms. If your roses have been badly infected by disease, cut out diseased parts with a harsher pruning in the fall. Avoid pruning roses in freezing weather. Some Common Insects to be wary of around your roses are: Aphids - Small green, brown, yellow, red or sometimes black insects with pear shaped bodies that like to cluster on the leaves and buds of roses sucking the juices and causing poor plant growth. Spider Mites - Very small brown, green or yellow bugs with oval shaped bodies that hide underneath leaves sucking the plant juice and causing unsightly speckled spotting on leaves and a silky webbing similar to a spider web. Heavy infestations of this insect could cause your rose to die. Treat as soon as they are noticed. Leaf Tiers - Small green caterpillars that spin a web and roll the leaves around their bodies. If you spot Leaf tiers, just crush the rolled leaf with gloved hands, remove it and disguard it. Slugs can also eat the leaves of your roses. You can either sprinkle salt directly on the slug or place a slug-bait in an area near your rosebush as prevention. |
