Weed Prevention Techniques

Preventing weeds begins with learning to identify the annual weeds from the perennials. There are different techniques for dealing with each type. If you learn to hoe and hand weed effectively along with doing frequent "weed checks" in your garden it will be much more manageable.

1. Annual Weeds: Annual weeds produce thousands of seeds. They are carried in the wind, by people and animals and each seed develops into more weeds. To break this cycle, don't ever allow annual weeds to go to seed. Get rid of them when they first begin sprouting. (usually after a rain)

FUN FACT: "EACH single plant can contain up to 15,000 seeds"

2. Perennial Weeds: Perennial weeds need to be dug up by the root. If you don't get all the root, the weed will grow back. They grow on reserve energy until the new shoots reach sunlight. If you can continue to catch these before they get to high they will use up all there reserve energy and will eventually die.

Rodale Press Inc. Suggests: "Pour boiling water on poison ivy and other perennial weeds with stubborn root systems that are difficult to pull out of the ground. Boiling water will kill annual weeds as well. It literally burns the leaf tissue. Be careful not to pour it on your garden plants or on yourself." Editors Note - This method may be harmful to worms and other beneficials around the soil surface. There will certainly be no long term dangers to the environment.

FUN FACT: "Eat your weeds! - Dandelions contain more vitamin A than carrots"

Whatever type of weed that you are battling; if you always mulch your exposed soil and pathways you can stop weeds before they start.
