Winter Wildlife
As a child, to encourage me to clean my room, my parents put a sign on my door that said "wildlife sanctuary". I understood the point they were trying to make at the time but now that I love to watch wildlife and I can apply this to my garden.... By not cleaning the garden to perfection, you can create your own wildlife sanctuary right in your backyard. Although you may not be aware of it, your yard and garden is "Home" to a variety of wildlife each winter. Flowers: Both birds and Insects appreciate your spent perennials so don't cut them. Vegetables: Birds also love the seeds produced by several vegetables such as carrots, parsley and fennel. Leave a few to go to seed. Small Trees and Shrubs: Attract "insect eating" birds with shrubs, ornamental grasses and small trees. You can also leave a section of your lawn un-mowed to protect insects. Sparrows and blackbirds love the seeds from ornamental grasses. Fruit and Berries: Bitter fruit trees such as cranberries and choke-cherries sweeten up a bit during the harsh winter months and provide a nutritious snack for hungry birds. Evergreen Trees: The berries and cones of evergreens such as Pine trees, juniper and spruce trees will feed animals and small birds that eat their seeds. Lighten up on your fall clean-up and sit back and enjoy the wildlife all winter long. |
